Ecuador’s shrimp industry is urging its country’s government to implement retaliatory trade measures against Brazilian vehicle makers as part of efforts to overturn what producers describe as a “prolonged and unjustified blockade” of shrimp exports.
“We have tried every possible avenue, and Brazil’s response has been a permanent blockade,” Jose Antonio Camposano, president of Ecuadorian shrimp producers association Camara Nacional de Acuacultura, told IntraFish at the Seafood Expo Global trade fair in Barcelona last week.
“Given this response, there is no other option but to seek other mechanisms to access the market,” he said.
Camposano calculates that Ecuador imports $900 million (€664 million) more of Brazilian goods than Brazil buys from Ecuador. Vehicles make up around a third of Ecuador’s imports from Brazil, he said.
