The Biden administration is assessing the challenge posed by China’s rapid rise in electric vehicle manufacturing and export, an official from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said on Thursday, noting the issue is among those the agency is considering as it finalizes its mandated review of Section 301 duties on Chinese goods.
China’s EV industry has taken off in recent years, and as the vehicles are more widely adopted in China, its companies are looking elsewhere, with Chinese auto exports surging this year – even overtaking Japan for the most in the first quarter of 2023. So far, the U.S. is not a major market for Chinese companies. Still, during a Washington International Trade Association webinar, USTR Chief Counsel for China Trade Enforcement Brian Janovitz noted the number of “good jobs” that could be jeopardized by a flood of Chinese imports and said the trend is one “taken seriously” by the U.S.
